PEDALING THE GLOBE. Pt. 6

I love the movie, “A River Runs Through It.”

As the movie comes to an end, we witness an old man fly fishing on the banks of a river in Montana, and the narrator, (Robert Redford) muses,

Of course, now I'm too old

to be much of a fisherman.

And now I usually fish

the big waters alone...

although some friends

think I shouldn't.

But when I am alone

in the half-light of the canyon...

all existence seems to fade to a being

with my soul and memories...

and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot

River and a four-count rhythm...

and the hope that a fish will rise.
I can relate.

Perhaps the modern day equivalent, and most relevant to my circumstances, might sound very much like,

Of course, now I’m too old to

pedal a bike like I did at half my age.

And admittedly, I pedal the local highways and byways

alone…

although some friends

think I shouldn’t.

But when I am alone

in the darkness of O-dark-thirty…

all existence seems to fade into

a 10 mile stretch of concrete…

upon which I give my time and efforts

And the ethereal sounds of silence

and bless-ed solitude

And an hour devoted to

a routine which never grows old…

and which I must pursue.
