There is a particular piece of equipment which is commonly strapped onto a horse, which denies it an opportunity to see anything in its peripheral vision, which allows it to focus on the track ahead, and which is appropriately named.

Blinders

I’m convinced that a multitude of “common,” as well as many well-known representatives of the Christian faith are wearing proverbial blinders at this moment.

A couple of months ago 15 or 20 fundamental, evangelical and Pentecostal Christian ministers staged a public prayer meeting with the top Republican contender for this year’s nomination to the highest office in our land. And in so doing provided the American public the strong implication that they support this candidate’s bid to become the 45th President of the United States. Perhaps the best known and most recognized minister in the crowd was Rev. David Jeremiah.

And then yesterday, after allowing this particular candidate to address the student body of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr. publically endorsed Donald Trump for this high office.

A man who has denied any experience whatsoever with the forgiveness of a loving God, and infers he doesn’t want or need it. A man who has amassed billions of dollars, takes every opportunity to give himself the personal credit for having done so, and openly brags about his great wealth. A man who, admittedly, gives as good as he gets, is not reticent to pull any punches, and has made several demeaning remarks about women. A man in whom not a speck of humbleness exists; who in his own mind, at least, is capable of everything short of walking on water.

Am I missing something here? What of the lowly Galilean? What of the life which He lived, and the model which He set before us? What of that sacrificial life and death?

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ. Who, being in His very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Phil. 2:5-7

“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Phil. 2:8

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.” John 13:3-5

“But those who think themselves great shall be disappointed and humbled, and those who humble themselves shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12
