HUGS IN A HURRICANE

The year was 1992, and my Army National Guard unit had been called to active duty to support the people of Homestead, Florida immediately after the devastation of Hurricane Andrew. Several of us soldiers were walking out of a McDonald's Restaurant with M-16's slung over our shoulders.
In a poignant ad-lib moment, suddenly a woman walked up, virtually “out of nowhere,” and threw her arms around me, and exclaimed,
"You guys just don't know how much we appreciate you coming to help us."
I’ve wondered what ever became of that wind-tossed stranger and I never cease to pray for her.
