I was just
watching a video segment which depicted the Japanese surrender to the allied
forces at the end of World War II.
The film is
one of comparatively few produced during WWII which was done in color, (vs.
black and white). In it we see General Douglas MacArthur and a host of other
allied generals; along with representatives of the Empire of Japan.
Of course,
the entire affair alone is something to behold for both its simplicity and
eloquence; its solemnity and poignancy. What especially struck me, however, is
the sight and sound of a host of aircraft which flew over the USS Missouri at
the conclusion of the ceremony, and the camera man’s later characterization of
this facet of the larger event.
“Wave after
wave of aircraft of every conceivable kind flew over that proud ship. 1500 in
all. It was the most compelling thing
we’d ever seen in our young lives. We dropped to our knees and prayed and cried
at the sight.”
Granted, I
wasn’t there, and the video doesn’t do his words justice, as it seems we have
been left with a few seconds of film footage which depicts all of a hundred or
so planes flying in formation. Thus, in this case a picture isn’t worth a
thousand words, but I think the poignant description of the photographer helps
add substance to what may only remain in the hearts and minds of a handful of
men who were present on that day.
I have
reflected upon his 42 words, and the implication of the emotions and actions
described in them, and have settled on one thing.
The
righteous cause in which we were engaged, and what can only be described as a
spiritual response to that final massive display of force on the last day of
the second war to end all wars.
God grant
that we may avoid future conflicts. But God give us the wisdom, will and wherewithal
to fight that righteous fight again and, if called upon, emulate those who went
out, but didn’t come back; and gave their tomorrows for our todays.
