I was just scrolling through my social media homepage, and I noticed a
video which featured a well-spoken young man who was, when the video was made,
addressing a group of students somewhere and who were involved in some unknown
forum.
At any rate, a student stands and asks him to respond to what he perceives
as the evils of Socialism. This unknown speaker goes off on a soft-spoken
tirade against Socialism. (As I implied, he was very fluent, and definitely knew
his subject).
This eloquent, but “barely out of college” fellow speaks to the hundred
million people who have died under dictatorial regimes, such as, Mao’s China
and Stalin’s Russia. He goes on to talk about how poorly our welfare system is
managed in the United States, and how many people take advantage of it. He also
denigrates the Social Security system, Medicare and Medicaid, and the inherent
flaws built into these programs.
I responded to the video in the following manner.
I can agree with much of
what he said, and there are some significant abuses in the system, especially
as it applies to Communism. Interestingly enough, my 6th cousin Franklin
Roosevelt was the impetus behind the Social Security system, and I'm grateful
for my and my wife's pensions and insurance coverage under Medicare. I don't
believe anyone would volunteer to send their monthly S.S. checks back to Uncle
Sam. In regard to Medicaid, my mother depended on it to cover her nursing home
payments. And my disabled daughter depends on Medicaid for her insurance
coverage, and S.S.I. disability payments for room and board the past quarter
century. No doubt there are abuses, but I'm personally glad the system has been
in place for my daughter the past 25 years. Without it, I would probably be
living in a tent under a tree by now.
The young man is
well-spoken, but I think he neglects to address the kind of personal persuasion
which I have referred to here. I think if this young man had a borderline retarded
daughter who depended on the graces of this great nation, he would probably be “singing
a different song.”
