Muhammad Ali and the Preacher

There is an old story about Muhammad Ali relating to a fundamental preacher who stood outside a restaurant or book signing or some function in which the famous boxer was involved. The pastor was dressed in the standard black suit, and skinny tie, and in his right hand he held a sign which warned the renowned Muslim of the dangers of hell fire, and which urged him to repent.

Apparently, the big guy came out a side door, got into his limo, and drove down the street on which the preacher stood with his sign. Suddenly, the vehicle slowed to a stop, Ali stepped out, grabbed the little fella by his lapel, and planted a kiss on each of his ruddy cheeks. And with that he opened the limo door, stepped in, closed the door behind him, and the vehicle disappeared out of sight.

And while the heavyweight champion staked no claim with the Christ of the New Testament, it was apparent that he was all too familiar with, and attempted to practice the Golden Rule.

“Whatever you would that men would do to you, do you even so to them,”

(rather than the standard adage of our day),

“Make sure you do to them before they have a chance to do to you.”
