On a recent out of state trip to visit loved ones, my wife and I happened to take our grandchildren, Sarah, 17 and Gary, 13 to see a movie.
While we were traveling through a little speed trap known as Ludowici, (Georgia) the two siblings were engaged in a short, but heated discussion. The topic was Sarah's upcoming graduation and plans to attend a university in central Florida.
(Gary) "But I don't want you to leave! I want you here with me!"
To which Sarah responded,
"Well, I'm sorry. I've got to do what's good for me!"
Their conversation calls to mind a similar one I had with my own father when I was about Sarah's age.
"Son, I've been thinking about it, and when you register for college this Fall, I believe you should take up Industrial Food Technology."
You could have knocked me over with a feather. Industrial Food Technology? Right outta the blue with a curriculum I'd never heard of.
Needless to say, I responded with something like,
"Run that by me again. Nope. That's not what I'm gonna do, dad. I intend to pursue Secondary Education. That's my calling, and that's what I'm doing." (Conversation closed).
While there are those who care for us, and entertain perfectly good agendas on our behalf, ultimately it behooves us to listen and consider what he or she has to offer, but as scripture admonishes us, "Work out our own salvation..."
... (and this portion of God's Word implies much more than the availability and pursuit of heaven).
