As a counselor I tell the story of a
woman who gets up one morning, walks into town, and falls into a pothole. She
manages to climb out, and goes about her business. We could honestly classify
what happened to the lady as an accident.
However, if this same woman walks down
the same sidewalk for the next thirty days, and falls into that same pothole
thirty mores times, well, we would no longer refer to such a situation as an
accident.
Some people live out their lives this
way.

As a counselor, I tell a homespun
story of a young man who walks into a room, and discovers the light is not
working. At this very moment you and I walk into an adjoining room with a one
way mirror, and we are allowed to observe what he does.
The young man flips the switch, but
the light isn’t coming on. He continues to stare up at the light bulb, but
absolutely nothing is happening. Rather than check the fuse box, or call an
electrician the young man flips the light switch, again and again.
You and I finally leave the
observation room, and decide to check on the man again… fifty years later.
As we walk into the observation room,
lo and behold we notice this frail, elderly man holding a cane in one hand, and…
flipping the light switch; looking up expectantly at the light bulb. And absolutely
nothing is happening!
Some people live out their lives this
way.
