The longer I live the more cynical I
become in terms of the existence of fairness.
Fair simply doesn’t exist.
A couple of weeks ago a pregnant
pastor’s wife in Indiana, Amanda B., was alone in her house with a small
toddler when three men walked through the unlocked front door, sexually
assaulted her, and put a revolver to her head.
When her husband returned from the gym
he found his wife close to death. Ultimately, Amanda passed away.
There just ain’t no such thing as fair
in this old world.
Hasn’t God promised the righteous that
He would keep them in all their ways?
What of His promise? Has the Creator taken a
vacation to the far reaches of the universe? Is He on an extended visit to the
water closet? Did He tell anyone when He would return?
And yet the thoughtful Christian must
weigh scripture against scripture.
The same God who promised to keep us in
all our ways assures us of His acute awareness of a fallen sparrow. The same
Lord who has led us to believe that He is with us always, (even to the end of
the world) is, paradoxically, the One who provides us a detailed account of the
martyrs of the early church.
We can be sure that nothing escapes
God’s notice, that He knows the end from the beginning, and that His promise to
keep us in all our ways is sure. For as long as He has work for us to do,
nothing can harm us, or deter us from that task.
And we can be equally sure that He has
found a way to “work everything for our good” in spite of the existence of the
free will with which mankind has absconded. And we can be sure that we will “understand
everything by and by.”
When examined in the light of
mortality, there’s no such thing as fair. When examined in the light of
eternity, well, that may be an entirely different thing.
There’s a poignant scripture in Romans
Chapter 8 which exclaims,
“For I reckon that the sufferings of
this present world aren’t worthy to be compared to the glory that will be
revealed in us.”
Life is momentary. Life if fragile.
Life is like a fog in the morning which disappears at noon day. There are
simply no guarantees.
Fair only exists in the light of
eternity. As much as we would like to “make heads or tails” out of the lack of
fairness operating, or failing to operate around us, it simply cannot be done.
It behooves us to trust our soul to the
One who is aware of our circumstances before our circumstances develop, Who
will keep us in all our ways, and safe from all harm; until such a time that He
calls us home.
