Bill Pearce,
the late host of the Christian radio broadcast, “Night Sounds” referred to a
rather unusual concept on his archival internet segment today.
He said we
are not so much human beings as we are
… human
becomings.
(and)
He went on
to muse,
“It is
easier to admire a person of excellence, than it is to become one.”
How absolutely
poignant and true.
One
particular variable which prevents our becoming such a person is our inability
to leave the past behind, and stretch towards whatever it is which has the
power to make our lives more excellent and worthwhile.
In the Book
of Philippians, Paul the Apostle admonished his readers,
“This one
thing I do. Leaving the past behind, and turning to all that God has for me.”
(Phil. 3:13)
It is too
easy to become stuck in the past. Oh, not literally. While I love that old
movie, “The Time Machine,” and have enjoyed the “Back to the Future” series,
there just aren’t any… (Time Machines).
And yet, we
have all been impacted by people, places and things in the past, but we simply
can’t allow those circumstances to overwhelm us, rob us of functionality, and
constrain us with negative emotions.
God has
grand plans for our lives, as individuals. There are things for us to do. There
are goals for us to reach. There is a “becoming” out there for all of us.
We are not
so much, as Bill Pearce once reflected, human beings, as we are
… human
becomings.
