THIS ISN'T A HOBBY

This year’s winner of “The Voice” is a rather unlikely young man by the name of Jordan Smith. Unlikely because he is easily 70 lbs. overweight, rather effeminate, has a voice range which falls somewhere between a first tenor and second soprano, and he is a Christian.

Today I was watching a PBS special featuring, you guessed it, Jordan Smith. Well, it seems he already has a ‘power name’ on his side because who should accompany him on the piano, but… David Foster.

As with any program of its kind, there were any number of comments interspersed between the songs of his repertoire. I found one such comment poignant and telling.

David Foster spoke.

“After Jordan and I began working together I made the offhand remark,

‘You know Jordan you have a simply marvelous voice.’

To which he responded,

‘Well, you know David, this isn’t a hobby!’”

I don’t mind telling you that his response struck me like a sledge hammer, and were, by far, the weightiest words I’ve come across in quite some time.

For you see, whatever worthwhile thing we do, whatever just cause we attempt, whatever goal we pursue, whether physical, spiritual, vocational, or relational, we must pursue it with all the fervor which the Creator has instilled within us.

To pour less time, effort and diligence into the plans and purposes which God has burned into our consciousness is simply unacceptable.

After all, this (whatever ‘this’ implies for you)

…isn’t a hobby.
