THE KENNEDY ASSASSINATION - November 22, 1963

I missed school that day, and was watching TV. Suddenly, Walter Cronkite broke into the regular programming. At first there was only a blank screen with a CBS logo, and Cronkite's voice. After a bit the live video feed came on. At that time if a live broadcast was done the TV camera had to be warmed up first. After that the national broadcast channels kept a 'hot' camera in case they immediately needed to come on the air for a special broadcast. The coverage of the Kennedy Assassination continued throughout Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday with no other programming during that time period. Americans watched the coverage of the new president, Lyndon Johnson, as Air Force One arrived back in Washington D.C. later that evening, saw Lee Harvey Oswald gunned down on live TV on Sunday, and witnessed the Kennedy funeral procession and burial on Monday. The events of those four days rank along with a couple others as the most memorable in the 20th Century.
