Out of His Will, but Not Out of His Care

As I write this first line of this blog, I am listening to a segment of “Night Sounds” with the late Christian broadcaster, Bill Pearce. And as was he was prone to do, Bill played two or three songs or hymns during the course of his 28 minute program.

And as tonight’s program got underway, Mr. Pearce put on one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, and which spoke to the theme,

“You may be out of His will, but you’ll never be out of His care.”

(How inestimably true).

Too often, as Christians, we drift away from God’s will for our lives, but it is impossible to drift away from His care. Granted, sometimes we find ourselves complaining about where we are, though sometimes we have put ourselves smack dab in the middle of proverbial quicksand. And sometimes our Heavenly Father has to teach us lessons, as He taught the children of Israel in the desert; to bring us back to reality, and change the path we find ourselves walking.

Out of His will, but not out of His care.

In Lamentations, Chapter 3:22-23, we read,

“It is only because of the Lord’s great mercies that we are not consumed. Your mercies are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness.”

One of the most wonderful hymns of all time.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

As “Anne of Green Gables” might have put it,

“With every new morning, we have been given a fresh new page upon which to write.”

Pardon for sin.

One of the nearest and dearest of all scripture verses, and one which cannot be acknowledged too often.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1st John 1:9)

In the original Greek, there is a progressive tense about this verse which implies a consistent confessing on our part, and a continual forgiving and cleansing of the impurities, poor choices, and abject sins which cling to us on God’s part.

While we are called to step away from dysfunctional decision making and purposeful infractions of God’s law, thank God “the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son cleanses us from all sin,” and has the innate power to make us right with the Creator.

While we may find ourselves out of His will, we will never find ourselves out of His care.
