On this month in which we celebrate Memorial Day, and upon seeing a photo of The Tomb of the Unknowns, and members of the Army Old Guard, I wrote the following caption:
"These
men and men like them have continued to walk the proverbial 21 steps.
Rain or Shine. Snow or Sleet. Calm and Storm. 24/7/365; without so much
as a moment's pause for almost a century. I have stood and watched them
walk that walk a few times over the
course of several generations of soldiers; having first visited
Arlington a full five decades ago. This same Army Dress Blue uniform now
hangs in my own closet, retired now, and to be passed on to my children
and children's children. What a wonderful heritage we have been given,
and what an inestimable legacy we leave."
