A couple of suspected
bank robbers led Los Angeles Police on a slow-paced car chase through city
streets today; once hitting the rear end of another vehicle, and narrowly
avoiding a couple of disastrous crashes at red lights;
… while
waving at crowds, and demonstrating their doughnut-making skills on the
asphalt.
And since
the (almost) humorous debacle was telecast in the area, and thousands watched
the chase on television and a myriad of e-devices, in a sad commentary on our
culture a (dis)respectable number of their fans were on hand when the chase
ended; to applaud their antics, hi-5 the duo, and pose for selfies.
And rather
than encounter the ire of the suspects’ admirers, police exercised due
diligence to cuff the suspects standing up, and gingerly placed them in the
back seats of squad cars.
I think the
doughnuts and hi-5’s and photos will soon give way to the stark reality of an
L.A.P.D. selfie and an 8x8x8 prison cell.
I do
something most counselors never do. I teach.
And one of
the concepts I teach is,
“Short Term
Satisfaction vs. Long Term Results”
The preceding
phrase speaks for itself. The young men in this particular story are a good,
no, an excellent example.
If I ever
write a psychology textbook, I’ll be sure to post their selfies next to this
concept.
