A Hearse and a U-Haul

In my interaction with audiences, my counseling clients and interns I have often quoted that old adage, “No one ever pulled a U-Haul behind a hearse.”

Well, my readers, it seems I’ve been proven wrong.

Today I happened upon a picture which depicted

… a hearse pulling a U-Haul!

The first Emperor of China Qin Shi Huang was buried with more than 8,000 terracotta soldiers, 130 chariots, and 700 horses; a form of funerary art whose purpose was to protect him in his afterlife.

Long before Qin Shi Huang, the Egyptian pharaohs were laid to rest in immense pyramidal-shaped tombs filled with sacrificial animals and food products; in an obviously ludicrous attempt to provide for the pharaoh in the life to come.

My friends, in spite of the good faith efforts of the servants of the Chinese emperor and Egyptian pharaohs, and the pre-planned symbolism of one man who left instructions in his final arrangements regarding a hearse and a U-Haul, scripture is clear,

… we just ain’t taking it with us.

(In a rather humorous footnote, one man once gave instructions for his corpse to be mounted on the seat of his favorite motorcycle, and was subsequently interred sitting on the vehicle inside a large box-like, see-through plastic coffin)!
