A Dubious Title, Indeed

There is every reason to believe that Mrs. Hillary Clinton will, over the next several months, contend against a Republican opponent, (possibly Donald Trump) for the prestigious office of President of the United States of America.

And if, indeed, this scenario falls together, as I expect, and Mrs. Clinton is elected, two variables will exist which have never existed in the history of our great republic.

The American public will not only find themselves the proud sponsors of a female president, but we will find ourselves the dubious recipients of her husband; in the formerly gender-exclusive role of which his wife was once all too familiar. (That each may, at different times, own the offices of both president and first spouse is nothing short of amazing).

There has been some debate regarding an appropriate title for a role which, ‘til now, is exclusive to the female persuasion.

First Man?

(Check)

First Husband?

(Check)

First Gentleman?

(No. That will never do)!

Rather like the 1988 Vice-Presidential Debate when Senator Lloyd Bentsen admonished Dan Quayle with,

“Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy!”

I’m sorry, but former President Bill Clinton can never be properly referred to as

“First Gentleman.”

I believe he abrogated that potential title when, as the result of his immoral choices, he shamed the noble office to which he had been elected.

(He may be first, but he's certainly not a gentleman).
