I had just sat down at my keyboard musing about a topic to blog when a news report came on one of the local television channels.
It seems a man took it on himself to drink and drive
... at the mind-bending, metal-rending speed of 100 mph.
Needless to say, as a result an accident was in the offing.
Car #1 slammed into Car #2 which was rudely shoved into Car #3.
A mother and young daughter were badly injured. A husband and wife sustained mortal injuries, and were involuntarily ushered to their eternal reward.
The drunk driver, we'll call him "Mr. Smith," was only slightly injured, transported to a local hospital, and subsequently arrested. He has been charged with two counts of Felony DWI Manslaughter.
So inestimably sad. So absolutely unacceptable. So totally needless.
There was a time one of my sons regularly transported another relative home from a nearby bar, after said relative took it upon himself to drink one too many alcoholic beverages. Almost like clockwork, "Jimmy" would call "Larry" a couple of times a week, explain his state of inebriation, and request a ride.
As a counselor I used to tell Larry he was codependent, and that he should allow Jimmy to figure it out for himself. That little season is long past now, as Jimmy overcame his alcohol dependence, and Larry has moved out of state.
However, based on the report to which I just referred, I'm glad Larry didn't listen to me.
At least Jimmy made the call.
Very little, (other than perhaps abortion) riles me as badly as people who knowingly and willingly drive under the influence of alcohol or substances.
Perhaps you've been wondering what the title of this blog is all about. Well, the initials represent what I feel should be the punishment for those who drive while intoxicated, and as a result cause life altering injuries and/or take the lives of innocent victims.
Perhaps as a Christian I should be more understanding, and offer a heart of compassion, but at the moment, having heard the foregoing report of two more needless victims of this crime, for now at least, the following abbreviations represent the rage flowing through my veins.
DWI - Driving While Intoxicated
STUBTLT - String Them Up By Their Little Toe
LTFTB - Leave Them For The Buzzards
(Perhaps I'll feel a bit more charitable by tomorrow).
